CK’s trip and a Dosa Quickfix

December 19th, 2004 admin

CK, my friend from IIT Guwahati (undergrad) was in the US for a couple of weeks. Knoxville, Tennessee was where Philips Software Center, Bangalore, India, wanted him to be. He came over to see me the weekend of 11th and 12th December. It was a fun trip all in all. You can check out some of the pictures in the photographs section . When CK was here I was still perfecting the art of the instant dosa and let him be a benefactor of my evil experiments. Follow the link the read more about this dosa.

Wedding Invitation

December 1st, 2004 admin

Kavita and I are getting married. It has been a long and often tough journey for both of us. Finally, sticking through it all, we have come a long way. The marriage has been fixed on February 13th, 2005 and is in the south-east Indian beach town of Visakhapatnam where my parents and Kavita’s mother live now. Here is a copy of the wedding invitation my dad and I are working on.

Microsoft Word and embedding fonts into the file

December 1st, 2004 admin

I have often had problem where I create a document in a certain font and the recepient complains that the fonts are hideous. That happens because sometimes I use fonts that the recepient’s computer does not have and so it decides to use a font it thinks matches my font, but the choice is often a sad one. Recently I was working with my father on my wedding invitation (True! Kavita and I are getting married on February 13th 2005 and the news deserves a separate blog entry) and faced the problem of not being sure if he is seeing the same font that I intended for him to see the invitation in (he was going to get the cards printed back in Visakhapatnam, India, so he better know exactly what I had in mind). And I came to learn after looking for advice on the internet, that you can embed fonts right into the document just before you save it. This works in PowerPoint too. The way to do this is do a File->Save As, before a keen eye catches at the top right of the Save As window an option called Tools. Upon clicking that you will find the “Embed True Type Fonts” choice(PowerPoint) either right there or under General Options(Word).

Valentine Song

December 1st, 2004 admin

To my only valentine,
the love and longing in every line,
te rhythm and romance of every song,
my ache, my cure, for so long.
You’ve been my friend for ever,
funny, caring, daring and clever.
Your smile is like spring for me,
more beautiful than anything for me.
Everything I have has a share for you.
I open my heart, lay it bare for you.
Your hopes and dreams are mine too.
I will try my best to help us through.
Can’t stay mad at you for long,
often right we are, though sometimes wrong.
Times when life gets complicated,
are saved by memories of times we celebrated.
I know I am grateful to no end,
for each living moment with you I spend.

Will you refresh my memory please?

December 1st, 2004 admin

I know you’ve told me a million times,
and I’ve asked you a million times since,
My frozen memory seeks warmer climes,
or a quick serving of hints.

I forget not because I want to,
nor do I lack interest,
I conjecture for I have no clue,
that maybe I am blessed.

Blessed to keep out of my mind,
All the clatter that I can,
Upon reflection in there I find,
the teflon of a non-stick pan.

Nothing I shove in sticks around,
long enough to be of use.
The empty chambers are tightly bound,
by slippery strings and screws.

I beseech respectfully that you reweigh,
this painful prolonged tease,
For nocuous it is everytime I say, “Pray,
Will you refresh my memory please?”
